a Castle in the town of Taunton, in the county of Somerset

About Taunton Castle

The turbulent past of historic Taunton Castle, is masked by its transformation into a luxurious comfortable hotel with an award winning restaurant.

The castle was originally developed as a major military stronghold, with walls 13ft thick, its impressive gateway dates from 1495, and the Great Hall is 120 feet long. In another life, the Great Hall was the setting for Judge Jeffery's "Bloody Assize" held in 1685 when he tried and sentenced over 500 rebels.

These days the wisteria-clad castle presents probably the town's most eye catching viewpoint. It is surrounded by a pretty castle green, another spectacular view is that of the attractive turreted castle bow dominating a side street crammed with buildings of several periods.

Today, the lure of Taunton Castle is irresistible. It has been in the hands of the Chapman family for over 50 years, during which time it has maintained a splendid reputation of English hospitality and welcome. Its award winning restaurant has been the training ground of such renowned chef's as Shaun Hill, the present Head Chef is the talented Richard Guest who produces an exciting array of mouth-watering dishes for guests. Apart from superb dining, at the Taunton Castle Hotel you can look forward to a relaxing time being pampered and spoiled in an authentic historic atmosphere of England's medieval past.
